With fourty successful past conferences to their credit,
the ESR Spectroscopy Group of the RSC have established
a prestigious Annual International Meeting which is generally held in the spring of each year at
a University within the UK. We are also one of the oldest special interest groups within the Royal
Society of Chemistry.
The meetings cover the applications and theory of EMR spectroscopy in a wide
range of scientific displines, from physics, chemistry and biochemistry to biology and the earth and
medical sciences. Thus the meeting enables scientists with very different interests, but held together by
their common passion for the application of EMR spectroscopy, to meet, to talk, and to exchange
views and ideas. This is a major strength for the conference in a world where science disciplines have become
more and more specialised. As a basis for the Meeting we invite lectures from a
distinguished group of Plenary Lecturers with divers specialities.
The meeting usually runs from a Sunday until the following Thursday, either just before or just after
the Easter Holiday. Delegates arrive on the Sunday afternoon for registration, sometimes a lecture,
and an evening reception. They leave after lunch on the following Thursday. The general format of
the meeting consists of a series of plenary lectures of 50 minutes duration followed by 5 to 10
minutes of question and comment. The plenary lecturers are carefully chosen by the Committee who
invite established and renowned scientists to describe and discuss their work, putting into perspective
the important recent developments in their fields of interest. The plenary lectures are followed
by shorter talks of 20 minutes duration given by the other delegates. Posters displaying delegates
current research work are welcomed, are displayed during the week, and are the subject for a special
poster discussion.
In addition to the plenary lectures and talks, the Conference is also the occasion for the
annual award and presentation of the Bruker Lecture, sponsored by Bruker Biospin.
We actively encourage postgraduate and postdoctorate students, sometimes by providing bursaries,
and always by giving discounts to attend our meetings so that they can meet and listen to these World experts.
We also encourage these students to present their own work during the Meeting. To this end
Jeol UK have generously agreed to sponsor the Jeol
Student Lectures. A prize is awarded for the best oral presentation by a young scientist at the conference.
The competition is restricted to 2nd and 3rd year PhD students and postdoctoral fellows in their
1st year of research.
The conference has a lively Social Program with several receptions, usually an afternoon excursion
on the tuesday afternoon, and a Conference Banquet on the Wednesday.
